Thyrargo are a sort of Finnish death metal supergroup composed of seasoned musicians that have worked in acts like Catabolic, Illusions Dead, Boot, and, most notably, Children of Bodom, but their debut EP, Impulses, was quietly released last year without too much fanfare in spite of that. That's a shame, because this is some strong, high-velocity death metal that works in a decidedly American sound similar to Cannibal Corpse and Suffocation, albeit a little thrashier than that implies. Generally, this release is just pedal to the metal brutality with heaviness, complexity, and not a drop of mercy to be found. The band is unsurprisingly tight and proficient, with former Children of Bodom guitarist Alexander being the clear highlight with his first-rate guitar work, particularly his solos, and while the songwriting is hardly novel, the songs are all entertaining blasts of violence and hatred, just as all death metal should be. Definitely a band to look out for in the future. |
