Mutant Blast are a Finnish 4-piece all about taking the bones of thrash and death metal and covering them in some good old-fashioned heavy metal and hard rock, what we often call death 'n' roll. The closest comparison I can make is obviously later Entombed and Entombed A.D., mostly because it sports the classic HM-2 distortion pedal sound and has the same kind of care and energy Entombed showed in those days (no matter what anyone says). Vocalist/guitarist Toni Malinen is definitely the star here, rolling out addictive groovy riffs while approaching the mic with a more rock-esque kind of grunt than average, which all fits the style like a well-greased glove pumping up a beer keg at a raging party. I wouldn't mind hearing a full-length from these Finnish deathsters, and you probably wouldn't either after giving this a spin. See below for more reviews and interviews... ↓ |
