Receiver is a band from Cyprus that is joining the ranks of female-fronted traditional/epic metal bands alongside Sanhedrin, Tower, Blood Star, etc. Whispers of Lore is their debut, and it is a galloping riff fest with a huge nod toward Iron Maiden and '80s heavy metal in general. Tracks like "Starchaser" and "Tresspasser" rumble along with headbanging abandon, sweeping listeners along for the ride. "Raiders of the Night" is perhaps a bit on the simple side, but the chorus is tailor-made for the live setting. I can already hear the crowd shouting "RAIDERS!!!" with front woman Nikoletta Kyprianou belting out the rest of the chorus. The twin guitar work that follows is pure Murray/Smith goodness. The songwriting could use a bit more variation as the songs follow similar blueprints, meaning the album doesn't have a weak track, but some don't stand out from the rest very much. Whispers of Lore is a solid first effort from Receiver and a hopeful portent of more good metal to come. |
