I always hesitate before grabbing a live album for review as I don't see much point in doing that. But this being Watain, I had to give this one a listen. A live album from a band such as Watain is quite different from that of more commercial metal where fans are easier to hear and can be heard singing along. So, no surprises here: the frontman does the occasional chatting between songs, even getting the crowd pumped up quite a bit and really giving the listener the impression of the next best thing to being there. Of course, once the music starts, then that crowd noise pretty much disappears, replaced by Watain's loud, heavy, brutal black metal. At times this is almost like studio album quality, so they managed to get a good recording out of this show in Stockholm in October 2022 (I assume there might have been some touch-ups later; I don't have that information). Watain have a large discography by now, and the selection here is top-notch and flows together really well—it would work as just a compilation of studio recordings without sounding like haphazard choices. The next best thing to this would be a DVD or BluRay, but that doesn't seem to be in the cards at the moment(?) Having seen them live nearly 20 years ago, Die in Fire—Live in Hell is a good example of the power of Watain live on stage. |
