I get more promos than I can handle, not to mention the stuff I buy, but I also have Spotify and often check out the recommendations. This album is one of them. Mortal Strike remind me a little bit of Municipal Waste (to stick to relatively fresh references), their thrash being of the '80s "party thrash" variety with a crossover edge to it. The vocals are loud and borderline spoken, and they're kind of singalong-inducing, certainly the kind of vocal work that gets the crowd going in a live setting. A lot of the riffs are the "machine-gunning" type, very addictive and guaranteed to fuck up your neck if you try to keep up. This is not a slow album, far from that, it's high-octane, pedal-to-the-metal thrash. I find the sound is quite clean and that's sometimes a negative, but in this case it just works, and really brings out the razor-sharp, heavy, incisive guitar work. Needless to say, the drumming can get pretty insane on this one. Nothing flashy, but man, the walls are shaking. This is pretty much no-frills, straightforward, fun and punishing thrash. And my neck hurts. |
