I reviewed a couple of this band's early albums about a decade ago, and I remember they played decent but fairly generic Black/Death Metal in the general vein of stuff like Belphegor or Behemoth, but this. . . this is something else. Still definitely Black, Mephorash have cast aside imitation and taken their music in a slower, darkly ritualistic direction that sounds like nothing I have heard before. The album segues effortlessly between slow, grinding atmospherics with ritualistic drumming and vocals that are either whispers or malevolent intonations, and then launches into punishing segments of harsh Black Metal before settling down into an acoustic passage or more arcane muttering backed by choirs. It sounds like chaos but it's not—it's very tightly controlled and obviously well thought-out. There's a kind of Beherit vibe at work here, as you are never quite sure what you will hear next, but you know it is going to be some unhinged, evil shit. This may be too impressionistic for some, but if you like your Black Metal weird, misanthropic, and deeply occult then this is something to treasure. Unlike any other Black Metal album you will hear this year. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
