A short and sweet debut album for this one-man death metal band out of France. Like many other bands these days, Horoh plays old-school death metal, so don't expect innovation here. The most important thing is whether it's done right, and that's definitely the case on Aberration. The growls are especially effective, borderline cavernous, they add even more heaviness to the music which already doesn't lack in that department, especially on the slower passages where it gets downright crushing. I find an atmospheric vibe is often lacking in death metal, but Aberration has that going for it, giving the album a very sinister, borderline horror vibe that makes you want to keep the lights on. It's not quite present on the faster passages, where the thunderous drums and guitar work take over, with some razor-sharp riffage that will give your air guitar and your neck some exercise. Heavy, gory (in case you couldn't tell from the artwork), dark, Aberration is a crushing album of well-executed death metal that will pin you down and make you beg for more. Great debut and here's hoping for more from Horoh in the near future. |
