See? Even a good label like Adipocere screws the pooch sometimes. I generally like or really like bands on this label, but this one is so far off the mark I wonder what the heck is going on. Benighted are just not a good band. They basically play a speedy, grindy variety of Death Metal with some blastbeats and some Black Metal-styled shrieks. This is far too grindy to be of any real interest to me, and in fact the rat-tat-tat guttural parts are unintentionally funny. Some riffs here are OK, and the leadwork is pretty good, but this lacks anything to really distinguish it from a bunch of other bands like Deicide or Vital Remains except that this is not nearly as good. The playing is decent, and the songwriting is OK for this type of band, but overall Benighted are just not good enough to stand out as anything other than generic. So if you love blasty, grindy Death Metal and aren't very picky, then Benighted should do fine. But if you want something—anything—original or catchy about your music, you can safely skip this album. Too bad. |
