Some old-school Finnish black metal here. Right off the bat I have to say that, like many albums, there's likely nothing you haven't heard before in the genre. With that said, Iku-Turso do a good job of reviving the '90s Scandinavian sound and mixing things up a little. The music is cold and at times grim, the screechy vocals spew out hate like there's no tomorrow, and stylistically they occasionally reminded me of Varg Vikernes' style on the early Burzum material. Keyboards are used, but barely prettify the raw music and mostly add a bit of a suspenseful atmosphere to some songs. This is mostly fast paced and, despite the rawness, quite melodic (again, not in a pretty way). Not groundbreaking, but well executed and delivered with spiteful attitude. |
