Bald Mountain is the fifth full-length album from Evoking Winds, a band that plays very melodic and even orchestral black metal. The album contains a variety of vocal styles with the harsh singing a mix of black rasps and death shouts, but also female choirs, clean male singing, and no small amount of spoken word interludes. When the guitars are blazing along with tremolo picked fury, it's easy to think of Summoning or Finsterforst while the clean sung parts, which tend to back off on the aggression somewhat, remind me of Amorphis. I've seen this band labeled "folk," but that doesn't seem to be as much of a focus on Bald Mountain as it may have been in the past, but those elements are still present. I like that even their longer songs, like "In the Whispers of Stars Far Away," aren't overly long or meandering. It's also this track where Evoking Winds brings everything they do together and blends them well. I don't think Bald Mountain breaks any molds or takes melodic black metal to new heights, but it sounds great, is well played, and thoroughly enjoyable especially in times of long and contemplative solitude.
