Unholy Deification is the thirteenth album from long-running death metal dealers Incantation and the first one of theirs I've reviewed. This kind of US death metal with the cookie monster vocals has always left me cold, but I've grown to appreciate it when it is done well so in, I go. From the start, Unholy Deification sounds exactly like I expected; sharp guitars, tons of grooves, machine-gun drumming, and those low, rolling growls. The sound is clear and crisp and musically, Incantation has created a warm sound, not overly technical or austere. However, after a few listens some things struck me. The vocals are monotonous, varying little from song to song which are repetitive collections of the same sawing riffs, rapid-fire scales, metronomic drums, and groove-laden breakdowns. To my ears, the difference between "Convulse (Words of Power) III" and "Concordat (The Pact) I" is nearly negligible. They sound like perfectly good US death metal on their own, but they also sound a lot like one another which makes Unholy Deification play like one long 41-minute track vs. 10 individual songs. I know Incantation has their fair share of fans because when Michel and I saw them a couple years ago, the place was packed, and I can appreciate good metal even when it is a style I don't have much of an affinity for, but I find Unholy Deification uninteresting, which no amount of sounding good, great playing, etc. can make up for.
