Cryptic Process is a brutal death metal band out of France and I'll start with my main criticism: I'd like it better if it weren't for the occasional use of "pig squeal" vocals. I've gotten used to a lot of extreme vocal styles since I started listening to the genre, and this is one that I can't stand much. There are some more "chipmunky" vocals used as well, which aren't too bad, but where I like the vocal work the most is when actual growls are used. It's a deep style that blends well with their music. Moving on... This is not the most brutal death metal album I've heard (some bands kind of overdo it), but fear not, it's not like it's elevator music. There are some slower passages that feel like a slow-moving freight train is running you over, the heaviness almost feels physical when hitting those—what a great feeling. But for the most part, things are fast and hectic. Crazy-fast drumming, precise, crunchy, surgical guitar work that reminds me of New York death metal bands like Immolation coupled with a hint of the Florida sound, all delivered with attitude. The vocals (that again) do get in the way a little at times, which is yet another case for sticking to the growls instead of the higher-pitched ones that can become a bit of a distraction, though I am nitpicking when it comes to that and some people obviously like the style. Human Snack is a strong album that hints at good things to come from Cryptic Process. |
