Third album from Ural, a band from Italy that plays a crossover-influenced brand of thrash metal. Psychoverse starts with frenzied, horror movie screaming on opener "Drag Me to the Wolves" before settling into their particular groove which consists of sharp riffing, metronomic drumming, and shouted vocals. It's the singing that makes me think crossover as the vocals are of limited range and sound much the same from song to song. I'm not saying the vocalist is bad, just that what is laid down on the album is unvaried and, at times, irritatingly screamed. The music is solid, if once again not particularly inventive, though the drums have an artificial, triggered sound to my ears. The guitar tone is good, but the leads don't shine like you want from thrash, so at the end of the day, there's nothing on Psychoverse that makes it stand out from the crowd. There are some similarities with what Ural are doing today and semi-crossover bands of the '80s like Gothic Slam, Excel, and Forced Entry were doing, so if those bands put the wind in your sails, by all means check out Psychoverse. |
