Nefarious Mash is a one-man black metal band out of France and the music does share some similarities with the French scene of the late '90s and early 2000s, so if you're into that, then In Memory of Your Hopes is likely to be of interest. The music is a little raw but melodic, and it has a rough edge to it that I found quite addictive. It can get kind of chaotic and messy, and at times I couldn't help but think of Anaal Nathrakh even though this sounds nothing like it. It just has that all-hell-breaks-loose vibe where you have no idea what the hell is going on, but you like it. There are some spoken passages where the guy sounds pretty angry. I found that annoying on my first listen, but later I went, "I get you, man." The music is fast paced and kind of all over the place, but who needs order in black metal? I won't go as far as to say that Nefarious Mash is breaking any new grounds, but it's different enough from a lot of stuff I've heard in the past couple of years to pick my interest and call for repeat plays. |
