There's a lot of power-tinged speed metal out there these days, but Rascal are one of the bands who really gets it. The stars these boys chase after at lightning speed are clearly early Helloween and Judas Priest, though they're hardly imitators as they add in a fair bit of neoclassicism to their crazy guitar runs, which I assure you are all over this album and the clear highlight. I mean, what do you expect from a band with a song called "The Faster the Better"? Of course, they keep the pedal to the searing metal nearly all the time, going as far as reaching delirious speeds similar to old Dragonforce on the ironically titled "Slow Burn," but they do screech to a mid-tempo from time to time to keep things varied. The vocals are a bit of a weak spot, for while Kacper Pedziszewski gets the job done with his semi-nasal singing, he never really stands out except for when he starts grunting a bit in "Soldiers of Hell," and I respect the attempt to do different things if nothing else. Still, this lives or dies by its energy and whether or not the playing can match, and Lost Beyond Reason gets high marks in both regards, so anyone who loves their speed metal blazing and vintage will want to track this down.
