I called it, I called it over 15 years ago. Way back in the Gothic Kabbalah days I said someday we'd be staring down the barrel of a 3-disc album from this band, and I was right. The only saving grace is that the Leviathan trilogy has been a step up from crap like Beloved Antichrist, and the discs have been portioned out over three separate releases and not crammed into a single massive box. I really wish I felt more strongly about this, as I generally like Therion when they are on the ball, but this is just emblematic of their late-career output: agreeable, well played, and just not very interesting. The musicianship and production are as pro as it gets, but the songwriting is both far too imitative of past works and lacks any sort of cohesion, so the album does not create the kind of dreamy, opulent mood as this band used to be capable of. This is just an assemblage of parts, and while all of them sound fine individually, the whole has no character at all. See below for more reviews and interviews... ↓ |
