Colombia's Reckless is reaching back to the early '80s for speed metal inspiration on their debut for Dying Victims Productions, Sharp Magik Steel. I hear a lot of Show No Mercy Slayer between the lightning fast yet very melodic guitar work (think "Die by the Sword" and "The Final Command") and barked vocals punctuated with occasional high-pitched howls. I like the synthesizers on the intro to "Crimson Obsession," the kind that are reminiscent of those John Carpenter soundtracks, as well as the fact that Reckless used them sparingly, just to give some extra color to their '80s sonic palette without overwhelming the music. The songs are solid and played with a lot of fire and energy, but they follow the blueprints of the past pretty closely and as a result aren't much different from a lot of what has come before. That said, if you enjoy old school speed metal, you should find plenty of reasons to break out the air guitar before Sharp Magic Steel ends. A promising debut.
