Melodic and often proggy death metal is what you can expect from Ice Giant's second album, Ghost of Humanity. If Metal Archives is accurate, this band started out playing power metal and that tracks with some of the big chord changes and keyboard harmonies you can hear throughout the album, but they also employ mostly harsh vocals and incorporate some rather thrashy riffing. The sound of the album is clear and crisp without being sterile and I like that you can hear all the instruments clearly. As I mentioned, the songwriting is a power/thrash amalgam with some proggy death metal flourishes (for example, "Home for Eternity") and the occasional clean singing further adds to the prog inclinations. There isn't a bad song on Ghost of Humanity, so I found it a generally enjoyable listen all the way through even though it lacks a centerpiece composition (the closer, "Legacy", is a contender). If you are up for some prog-tinged death/thrash, Ice Giant are well worth checking out. |
