I am pleased to have received a few albums of no-frills black metal lately, and Funeral Winds's 333 is one of them. Very cold and grim black metal, no bullshit, nothing pretty in the slightest. This is very basic, reminiscent of some of the most underground black metal bands of the first half of the '90s, just without the recorded-in-the-bathroom sound, though some of the vocals are screechy almost to the point of sounding like distortion. The whispery raspy vocals used the most on the album are dark, creepy and unrefined and are the perfect fit for the basic black metal on offer. Despite the lack of any kind of flashiness, the music is kind of "catchy" and I found myself headbanging and twiddling the fingers more than once. At times I couldn't help but think of the rawness and pure rotten evil of Canada's Megiddo circa The Final War. A beautifully raw and basic black metal onslaught. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
