This band dates way back to 1984, but they disbanded in 1994 and reunited in 2010. In all this time, three full-length albums were released—including this one. What struck me the most about Swallowed by Hell is how much I was reminded of Destruction since their return with All Hell Breaks Loose in 2000. So much so that I went and looked to see if Schmier was singing on this (he's not). That is not to say that Morbid Saint are copycats, but I'll be damned if they tell me that they haven't listened to Destruction in their life (I'm already damned anyway, so it's all good). Neck-breaking fast, precise thrash is the name of the game here, as you probably could deduce from the reunited Destruction reference, and Morbid Saint sure know how to deliver the goods. It's practically impossible to do anything else while listening to the thrash onslaught on offer here. Infectious vocals, blazing guitars, thunderous drumming, and pretty much no rest for the wicked for the entire duration of the album. It's a nonstop thrash fest rooted in the mid-80s, but delivered with faster playing, more accuracy, and more polish than back in the day. This is good old thrash that doesn't sound like the "thrash revival," but much like the aforementioned Destruction, an older band that has actualized their music without forgetting their roots. I'm going to use the cliché "a thrashing good time" here because that's exactly what it is. Just full speed ahead, no holds barred thrashing fun. That's always welcome here.
