Ecclesia Militans is the second album from this French band going by the name Ecclesia, a Greek word meaning assembly or church. Metal Archives lists the band as "heavy/doom metal," but I can't help but think of late-80s Riot when listening to Ecclesia Militans. The singer's high-pitched wails and slightly gritty mid-range are spot on Tony Moore and there are a lot of crunchy guitars laying down crunchy riffs, some keyboard embellishments, and more speed than I typically associate with doom metal. Regardless of genre labels, Ecclesia Militans is a solid album with historical lyrics (the Inquisition and rooting out alleged witches) that is consistently good throughout, from the songwriting to the performances. It doesn't have a truly excellent track (not to my ears, anyway), but at no point does it drag or get boring, so if you like your metal with lyrics rooted in history, strong, clear vocals (with the occasional harsh singing thrown in), and plenty of crunch behind the melody, Ecclesia Militans is well worth checking out. |
