Striker have been reasonably prolific with seven album in the past 14 years. They've never been the heaviest or most metal band out there, but their catchy, upbeat, fist-in-the-air brand of heavy metal is certainly addictive and, while it can be mellow on disc, having seen them live a few years ago I can say that that is where their material shines.

Ultrapower starts off metal enough with a good crunchy track, but quickly gets into a style that's much closer to '80s glam metal in its more metal moments, but they're mostly working in a style that's much more reminiscent of '80s pop rock—albeit with a harder edge—that got me to check if I was listening to the right album. Sometimes they get even mellower and some stuff on here doesn't really belong on a metal album. That's the bad part. The good is that Striker are actually good at it and the songs are good, and people who grew up in the '80s are bound to be hit with some nostalgia as a lot of melodies—musical and vocal—sound right out of popular music that was on the radio or even in some TV shows of the time. Again, Striker usually put some crunchier guitar work, but the songs are nonetheless more in line with pop rock than metal. It's not what I expect from a metal album, but with that said, it's still a fun album, and that's what Striker do.
