I have a long history with this band, as I reviewed their debut EP Your Darkest Hour way back in 2005—in another life. I hoped for great things from this band, but their path has been a lot more complicated, with lineup troubles, changing trends, and a complete lack of the label interest and support I thought they deserved. This is their fourth real release and intended to be their last, to mark the twentieth year of the band. This band was originally about Melodic Death Metal the way it should be played—like Dark Tranquility, The Fifth Season, or In Flames back in the Colony days. Some of their output since has veered more into groove or metalcore, but this album sees them back in the proper vein of technical, slick melodeath, with pounding rhythms and sharp, aggressive riffs. Their last album was much slower and moodier, but this one really kicks ass. There are slower passages, and even some clean vocals (which sound pretty good), but overall this is a hard-assed metal album that is here to kill. If this is their last release, then this is a hell of a note to go out on, as this band finally delivers on the promise of their EP. See below for more reviews and interviews... ↓ |
