Some frostbitten black metal out of the province of Quebec, Canada here. I've been seeing the name around but did not get to check them out until recently. Quebec has been known for a prolific black metal scene for a good number of years now, and Sombre Héritage is a relatively recent entry (2020, Anno Fuckery) that came out all guns blazing with this debut album. Their brand of black metal is furious and violent, yet tends to get very melodic and melancholic. I'm reminded of the mid-90s Norwegian scene, not the most "nekro" stuff but rather those bands that blasted away while wrapping their music in a poignant atmosphere. The music feels cold and dark, even at its most melodic, sometimes leaving a feeling of uneasiness and even coming off somewhat depressive, though we're far from DSBM and the likes. The vocals are piercing screeches that I found to be quite haunting, if not downright nightmarish. There's a lot going on here, and it's one of those albums that seriously benefits from multiple attentive listens.
