Templar is a relatively new band out of Sweden that is mining the loose, melodic traditional metal sounds of the very early '80s on their Black Night demo (originally released digitally in 2023 and now getting a cassette release by Jawbreaker Records). The production is thin and stripped down, expected on a demo, and matches the music which is no frills guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. The songwriting is simple and derivative of bands like Iron Maiden ("Nightrider") of the Di'Anno era, Saxon, and mainland European bands like Axe Witch (circa Pray for Metal), Overdrive, etc. but there's a charm to the youthful exuberance that hearkens back to the early days of metal. They aren't doing anything that is going to separate themselves from the pack at this point, they'll need to write some better songs and improve the vocals, which are not great though the singer is certainly trying. Black Knight shows Templar is still quite rough around the edges, but there could be a gem waiting to be revealed. |
