Despite historically being home to big names in the style. Italy isn't exactly a hotbed of gothic metal these days (what is anymore?), so it's a little heartening to see a new band take a stab at the style, especially when they're good at it. I Colori del Buio (Italian for The Colors of Darkness. Definitely sounds better in Italian) are of a rare breed these days not only for what genre they play, but also their approach, which is less Unto Others or Tribulation and more early Katatonia and mid-period Paradise Lost with sweeping guitar work juxtaposing with harsh growls and the occasional bit of deadpan sotto voce to create a gloomy atmosphere that never becomes oppressive. This kind of thing needs a good ear for melody and an understanding of how to generate mood without overselling it, and this is a band that gets both of these down with a sparing use of keyboards and solid moody riffs that get heavy enough to qualify as metal. I will say that the first two tracks, while good, are structured pretty similarly to one another and sort of blend together, but closer "Burn Your Witch" works a slower groove and introduces some clean female vocals to do that old beauty and the beast effect you don't hear much of anymore, which shows the band isn't simply a one trick pony trying to ride nostalgia and seem to know their shit. I can't say this is amazing, but anyone who misses gothic metal trying to emulate past greats from the '90s will want to keep an eye on these guys.
