Wow. This is pretty bad. Listening to 2016's Mass Confusion, this new album sounds like a completely different band. With every listen, I've struggled to understand what they were trying to achieve here. The album is all over the place. Sometimes that's good, but in this case it really isn't. A lot of this borrows from "heavy music trends" such as nu-metal and, Load/Reload-era Metallica (not the couple of songs that were kind of decent) to some extent, metalcore. I'm reminded a lot of the popular mallcore stuff that was released mostly in the mid to late '90s and early 2000s. Heavy and kind of catchy, but really engineered to appeal to the popular crowd that jumps on the trend of the day until the majors steer them in a new direction. There are bits and pieces that are alright and the groove can take you in at times, but I spent most of the time with a "WTF?" look on my face when listening to this. I mentioned that this is all over the place: there are even nods to '80s pop rock. That has nothing to do on a metal album but, terrifyingly, it's some of the most listenable stuff on here. That's a serious case of "yikes!" right there. Now, this will appeal to a lot of people because it's worked before, but it is very unlikely to appeal to regular readers of The Metal Crypt, that's for sure. Bands are free to change their sound all they want, but when it's this drastic, a new name may be in order? This is not devoid on talent, so I'm giving it a generous rating of 2. Regular readers, please save yourself some pain and check out the very good Mass Confusion instead of this.
