The work of one man, Rüynn is a black metal project that's strongly reminiscent of the French black metal scene around the year 2000, which was at its peak at the time —though newer bands that have formed in the past few years seem to have taken the challenge to best that period. Rüynn is arguably part of that bunch. The album is a rollercoaster of emotions, packed with dark melodies, some more melancholic passages, some straight-out blasting, violent black metal that reminds me of early-ish Immortal, as well as cold, incisive and precise melodic black metal that got me thinking of some Quebec-based black metal outfits. There's the occasional epic vibe, though I wouldn't go as far as to say that this is epic black metal. This is so loud and busy and intricate, developing new layers with every listen, that I was surprised that it was just one guy handling everything here. With albums like this and bands/projects like Rüynn, the French black metal scene is in good hands.
