Myths of Fate is the tenth album from the long-running symphonic metal band Leaves' Eyes and picks up where 2020's The Last Viking left off. As was the case on that one, there are purely symphonic/power metal tunes as well as more cinematic songwriting on display but, unlike the last one, Leaves' Eyes have narrowed their focus and created a less ambitious but more listenable album. Nightwish is the primary reference point, with singer Elina Siirala sounding a lot like Tarja on tracks such as "Realm of Dark Eyes," which is reminiscent of "Sacraments of Wilderness" and the like, but forging her own sound for much of the album. Everything here is lush and beautiful with occasional harsh singing that doesn't overly intrude. It's a consistent album with no amazing highs but no missteps, either, flowing smoothly for its entire length. Leaves' Eyes have hit something of a sweet spot that balances symphonic and cinematic metal, like an album between the last Tarja Nightwish album, Once, and the first with Anette Olzon, Dark Passion Play. It's a good spot to be in, so grab Myths of Fate if symphonic metal is your thing.
