Drymarchon is a one-man death/thrash act helmed by Sean Deth, who is very active in the Ohio metal scene and works in several bands spanning from stoner doom to black metal. This is his latest project, which focuses on feral, face-ripping death/thrash filled to the brim with flesh-rending riffs and violent, glass chewing vocals. Most of the songs aren't so much innovative as they are fully understanding of how you make this kind of thing sound as violent and evil as you can, but Sean puts his breadth of experience to use to surprise you now and then, like how the title track is a classical acoustic number of all things and his use of stirring melodic leads spun from the fire and rage below them, most notably on the album highlight "House of Altered Madness (717)". I do have to knock some points for the closing track, which is instrumentally fine but includes guest vocals that work in that Angela Gassow style of being forceful but kind of bad, and at under half an hour, this is far too short. Still, if Sean keeps it up, I'd say we're staring down the barrel of a classic blast of wrathful death/thrash, and after listening to this yourself, you'll understand why. |
