Debut for this symphonic power metal band out of Ireland that sounds quite accomplished for a group in existence since only 2020. Featuring lovely, operatic female vocals with male backing vocals, plenty of lilting keys, and some surprisingly punchy, direct guitar work (for power metal, anyway), the four songs on ...of Bygone Days are full of fire and very catchy. I like how Piano Black just plays metal and doesn't dither around trying to be overly pompous, cinematic, etc. It's downright refreshing. The singer adopts a nasally mid-range on "Northern Sons" and "Beneath Another Sky" that does the songs no favors and I could live without, but she mainly sticks with her soprano and that works well with the songs. This EP was a nice surprise and fans of Xandria, Amberian Dawn, and bands like that should check it out. |
