This band has only been around since 2020, and this is already their second full-length. I remember their debut from a few years ago and I thought they had real potential, and I was right. I have to award this band a palm I do not bestow often: they don't really sound like anyone else. I describe this loosely as Folk Metal, because the music does have some folkish melodies, but it sounds nothing like what is usually meant by the term. The foundation here is heavy, polyphonic guitar riffs that remind me a bit of Obsequiae, and over this the band layers both harsh growls and the almost constant ethereal singing of bassist Sophie Fraser. And by "layer" I don't mean the vocal styles take turns, but they trade off and often stack them on top of one another, allowing the female singing to function as an almost wordless element in the overall melodic soundscape. This description does not really begin to define the unique edge this music has, with shifting moods and intricate songwriting that makes every trip through this album a pleasure. A strange work but a very good one. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
