Hanging Garden are real veterans of Finnish doom/death, forming back in 2004 and releasing 8 albums in that time, including their latest work, The Garden. It's not surprising, then, that this album is a highly polished and professional release that weaves effortlessly between dreamlike melancholic and crushing misery thanks to an addictive melodic sensibility you can only call Finnish. This contrast is used to build tension and release it in waves of despair like the best of them do, particularly through the fragile, angelic voice of Riikka trading off with the Toni's deep, powerful grunts, and it all comes together to create evocative, often moving hymns to anguish and sorrow. Fans of Swallow the Sun and Theatre of Tragedy will find a lot to love here, as this is definitely of similar quality to the best of their scene. |
