Similar to how Alive! took a hard-working band from New York called KISS to new heights, No Sleep 'til Hammersmith took a hard-working band from London called Motörhead to the top of the heavy metal heap. Culling the best tracks from the band's first four albums and unleashing them on the rabid fans at shows in Leeds and Newcastle, this live record has it all. You want speed? Queue up "Ace of Spades," "The Hammer" or the double-kick masterpiece, "Overkill." You want anthems? " Motörhead," "Stay Clean" and "No Class" are there for you. Slow-burning crushers? "Metropolis" and "Capricorn" will scratch that itch. They might well have called this album Motörhead's Greatest Hits – Live as there isn't a single bad song here, just classic after classic from a band that inspired hundreds if not thousands of future metal musicians. I don't know how truly "live" No Sleep 'til Hammersmith is as live albums in the '70s and early '80s were often re-recorded in the studio to fix mistakes, sour notes, broken strings, etc., but regardless, many of these versions were considered superior to the studio versions by Lemmy himself, capturing the band's live energy the way they did. Shit, on the No Remorse compilation, no less than three of the songs were taken from No Sleep... over the album track. Motörhead would go on to release several more studio and live albums over a 40-year career, with plenty of highs, but if you want to hear the legendary band at their absolute zenith, grab yourself a copy of No Sleep 'til Hammersmith and get ready to hit repeat. It's a classic that should be owned by every fan of heavy metal. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
