Four years after their debut, Cyclone released Inferior to None and shifted gears to a more technical sound than before. The obvious cornerstone of this change is Metallica, particularly Ride the Lightning, as this has the same kind of guitar sound and overall tempo, and it works because guitarists Stefan and Didier had about the same ear for ripping, intricate riffs that Hetfield and Hammett did. I will say that this is nowhere near as catchy or memorable as the debut due to the more involved songwriting, less direct riffs, and fewer hooks. Further, Guido Gevels abandoned the high-pitched screams that were a big draw on their debut, making this album less individual overall. Still, I can't deny the quality of the material here, and if not for the bottom on thrash starting to give way, I could easily see Cyclone being referred to as Europe's answer to Metallica in their heyday, which is no small shit. This isn't as compulsively listenable as the debut, but it is a refined slab of technical thrash that fans of old Metallica and Artillery will enjoy the hell out of.
