Been a while since I heard some straight-up Finnish Power Metal that was actually Power Metal and not trying to be something else. This band has been gigging around and putting out demos and singles for like 15 years, but this is their first full-length album. This is definitely a veteran band, with members who have all done time in a lot of other bands like Amberian Dawn, Gloomy Grim, Walhalla, and a ton of other acts you have kind of heard of. Experience shows in the tight arrangements, professional gloss to the recording, and the generally high level of musicianship. Singer Sami Ilvonen has a lot of energy and charisma so, even if his tone isn't the best, he carries these songs well. The overall songwriting is good but not great, with some melodies sounding far too derivative and obvious, and the compositions sometimes feeling unfinished. This kind of thing should have big, rousing choruses to really get your blood going, but most of these fall a bit short, and the album is not as hooky or memorable as it could have been. Still, this remains a band to keep an eye on. |
