Escape from Justice is the debut album from Italy's Rogue Deal, a band playing '80s-style traditional metal that checks all the boxes: high, clear vocals, galloping bass, and lots of twin axe work. As you might expect from that description, there is more than little Iron Maiden influence in Rogue Deal's music. The guitarists trade licks and leads, the bass jumps along, and the singer, while no Dickinson, has a decent voice for this sort of metal. They even have an instrumental, "Starmirror," that is in the same vein as Maiden cuts like "Transylvania" or "Losfer Words." Maiden doesn't seem to be the only band the musicians in Rogue Deal listened to and you can pick out a John Gallagher from Raven-style scream on "Streetfighter" and an overall NWOTHM vibe like Striker, White Wizzard, and that crowd. The songwriting is admittedly a bit derivative, and the singer struggles in spots, but overall, Escape from Justice is a fun album of no-frills heavy metal that isn't trying to be anything else. |
