This is a new band out of Brazil playing crunchy traditional heavy metal on their debut self-titled EP. I'm reminded a bit of Savatage in the way their songs are written and performed but I find the vocals and lyrics to be a bit pompous, perhaps in line with their stage image featuring costumes somewhere between Neptune Power Federation and Lordi, though they are musically different. Some of the material on The Heathen Scÿthe struck me as pretty good, some left me wondering why the band made that choice. The Heathen Scÿthe is clearly trying to forge something different right out of the gate, and I give them credit for coloring outside the lines even if the attempt doesn't come together very well. I'll be interested to see if they can home in on something better on their next release. |
