Deceitome are a death metal act that started in 2015 from Estonia of all places, but judging from their 2016 debut, I'd have said they started in Sweden back in 1993 if I didn't know any better. Yep, they're among the hordes of acts who bow before the blood splattered altars of Carnage, Dismember, and Entombed, complete with the HM-2 sound and Kevin Grändi's Martin van Drunen-esque vocals (yeah yeah, Pestilence aren't Swedish, bear with me). Plenty of bands emulate the old Swedish sound without understanding that it takes more than a guitar tone to make music worth a damn, but these lads pair it with brutality, chunky riffs, sometimes beautiful melodies, and songwriting that can do more than miss the point of albums like Left Hand Path and Like an Everflowing Stream. I won't say this is a mind-blowing release, and it certainly isn't a novel one, but as far as good old-fashioned death metal that doesn't rely on gimmicks or mindless imitation, Deceitome are certainly among the relative few who do it right.
