Sometimes, I wish great bands would have a noticeable dip in quality just so I don't struggle to say more than "Hell yeah, they've done it again!" Acerus really are just Daniel Corchado's excuse to create first-class metal that sounds like the natural evolution of mystical '80s USPM from a better timeline. Much like The Tertiary Rite, this carves a unique sound akin to The Chasm by way of old-school acts like Griffin or maybe Liege Lord, taking the dark, mystical leanings of the former and doubling down on them with songs led by complex, rambling guitar work that contains hooks and harmonies to spare along with arcane, almost operatic vocals. The only real difference is that it's a bit more refined than last time, a bit darker, more mystical, and has a more confident delivery and performance from singer Esteban. Otherwise, it's exactly the kind of killer work of iconoclastic magic that Daniel has made a career spinning out while still coming off as fresh and exciting. An early contender for the year's best.
