ADON formed just back in 2019 and play a rather busy and complex black metal on their debut album. The first couple of times I listened to it was more as background music while doing various things and I thought it was unremarkable as I barely noticed it was there. That can be a good thing under the right circumstances. But, actually sitting down and paying attention is where Adon reveals its complexity and diversity and totally soaks you in. You have some late '90s black metal, some more proggy passages, lots of melody, even some parts that remind me a little of Anaal Nathrakh (when the latter is not too chaotic). There's an omnipresent soothing, mysterious-sounding atmosphere that is at its best when they go for a more melodic approach with whispered rasps that are delivered in such a way that they sound both cold and strangely "accessible," for lack of a better word. A lot of guitar work is more akin to what you'd hear in progressive heavy metal, or just plain progressive, which coupled with some relentless drumming makes for a refreshing sound that's almost hypnotic. So, there's a hell of a lot of stuff going on here, and the only way to take it all in is to give the album several focused listens. Even while writing this review after several listens I could still hear things I hadn't heard previously or that simply trigger a different feeling than before. Definitely worth checking out if you like busy, diverse and complex black metal. |
