This is the second compilation by Hungary's Elfsong, comprised of English-language versions of some of their previous songs, originally sung in Hungarian. With a name like Elfsong and the cover artwork, it should be obvious this band plays fantasy-themed power metal and tracks like "Fox Prince" and "Tales of the Lanternfolk IV" gather all the elements from fairy tale-like themes, double kick drums, keys and folk instruments (or their synthesized equivalents). Normally, that's a pretty good combo for me, but Elfsong have about the driest, least charismatic sound of any power metal band I can think of. They aren't bad, but the performances are wooden (to be fair, if I was singing in another language, I would be even worse than I am in English), the songwriting is bland and hits the same musical motifs over and over, the choruses aren't catchy, etc., etc. There's nothing on Quintessence II. that is any more than faceless, generic power metal. This is an album that is the definition of average. |
