Coltre is a band from the U.K. that I thought might have been yet another "lost" NWOBHM act when I started listening to their album, To Watch With Hands to Touch With Eyes out on Dying Victims Productions, but they formed in 2019. They have nailed the rough and gritty yet melodic and catchy sound from 40+ years ago expertly as they power through the eight tracks on the album. The guitar sounds loose and energetic and are spot on for the time period the band is aiming for. They play simple, straightforward metal with a dark edge, both to the songwriting and the lyrics, which had me thinking of Diamond Head on tracks like "To Watch With Hands" and "Through the Looking Glass," helped in no small part by the vocal resemblance to Sean Harris, Diamond Head's original singer. On my favorite song, "Temptress," Coltre let loose with a barnburner which would have fit in nicely on Iron Maiden's debut, from the speed and galloping bass to the twin guitar melodies. Other less obvious influences include Warlord and Wytch Hazel, decidedly heavier than the latter, but with a similar vibe. I wasn't sure what to expect from the cover, but I am really enjoying To Watch With Hands to Touch With Eyes and you will to, if you love the NWOBHM sound. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
