Strangely, I never got around to checking out this band until now, even though the band's name has always piqued my curiosity. Better late than never. A Mortal Binding kicks off with some rather aggressive death/doom with "Her Dominion" before turning into a much more slow-paced, heavier, melodic and melancholic doom that really sounds like what you'd expect from a band named My Dying Bride (not the most cheerful band name ;)). There's a mix of death-ish harsh growls and clean vocals that works very well; many bands completely mess that up, but here the alternance isn't off-putting in the least. It's an overall rather sorrowful and somewhat relaxing album, a little depressing but not nearly as much as I expected. Still, it's pretty crushing stuff more suited to a rainy day than a nice day at the beach, but it's a beautiful album in its own right.
