Rifforia is a Swedish band that's gone through a couple of iterations under different names since 2007 before settling on their current moniker in 2016. Axeorcism is the debut album (as Rifforia) and is a satisfying collection of power/thrash tunes that get down to business from the first note and go balls to the wall for the rest of the album. The guitars are heavy and mean as they churn out crunchy riffs, the lead work isn't amazing but it isn't overly showy either and serves the songs well. Veteran singer Nils Patrick Johannson (Astral Doors, Lion's Share, Wuthering Heights) sounds as good as I've ever heard him, unleashing his wild yet controlled David Wayne side, lending a lot of menace to tracks like "CC Cowboys" and "Evilized." There's nothing revolutionary on Axeocism, but it does what it does well and possesses a modicum of individuality, so it doesn't sound bland or derivative. If you like bludgeoning, mean US-style heavy metal in the vein of Vicious Rumors and Reverend, you need to check out Rifforia. See below for more reviews... ↓ |
