God Forsaken, one of the lesser-known greats of the Finnish death metal boom, partly for working in a vein of death/doom that was more Sabbathine than average at the time. They released two albums before breaking up in 1996, came back shortly in 2001 with a couple of stoner rock EPs before disbanding again in 2002, and finally, they returned in 2020 to play gigs with the promise of new material. Well, we still got some time before we get the full-length from them, but if this promo is anything to go by, we are in very good hands. Musically, this sounds like the true successor to their excellent debut, Dismal Gleams of Desolation, with dark, murky songwriting with an emphasis on the almighty riff, which is very evident on the killer, almost Candlemass-esque opening track "We All Die." "Sorrow" keeps things rolling with a sound reminiscent of Celtic Frost/Triptykon at their doomiest, which is never what I'd call a bad thing. As good as these two songs are, it's the final track here, "Fall Into Emptiness," that steals the show, serving as not only the heaviest song on here, but also as the heaviest song they've done so far, with church bell sound effects and Mika's desolate growls giving it a sinister mood that matches the best moments of the debut. Since this isn't an album proper, I don't know if I can call it great, but it does make it clear that God Forsaken are operating at full power and that I should be excited for what's to come. Give this a whirl and you'll be right there with me. |
