Black Sun is the second album from Edguy cofounder/guitar Jens Ludwig's band The Grandmaster. I haven't heard the first one, but based on Black Sun I can say Ludwig is staying in his lane of melodic, Euro metal. There's a bit of power metal, but we're talking mostly super smooth melodies, gritty vocals belting out catchy choruses, tasteful solos, etc. I'd call the songwriting pretty safe but really nailing the sound and vibe Ludwig and crew seem to be going for, so while Black Sun isn't a groundbreaking release, it is very enjoyable from start to finish. If you like Edguy, Masterplan, Fifth Angel, and bands in that groove, Black Sun should go down quite well. |
