More black metal from the province of Quebec, Miserere Luminis stand apart from most of the Quebec black metal bands I've heard previously by being slow and very melodic (in a good way). Don't take that as an indication that Ordalie is lightweight stuff, as the music is nevertheless crushing and does a good job of attacking the senses with a very depressing, yet beautiful atmosphere. The vocals—with French-language lyrics—are harsh but very emotional and tortured, adding another dimension to the already sorrowful music. This is probably best avoided if you're feeling depressed as there's absolutely nothing uplifting or "fun" here, but if you're looking for a very melodic, yet very metallic black metal album, Ordalie will grab you right from the start and won't let go. |
