Hands of Goro is a band out of San Francisco made up of Slough Feg bassist Adrian Maestes (who also sings lead here), Nite drummer Avinash Mittur, and Pounder (and a multitude of former bands) guitarist Tom Draper. With a lineup like that it shouldn't be much of a surprise to learn they play traditional heavy metal with some creepy, '70s occult rock and unpolished NWOBHM influences. The band gives us some Sabbath doom on "Waste of Blood," frantic, Haunt-style DIY metal on "Demonizer," and even a taste of Mark Shelton's unique guitar sound from "Flaming Metal Systems" on "You Have No Face." I'm sort of ambivalent in regard to the songwriting, which at times strikes a chord with me but at others sounds generic, but I give these guys credit for doing something different as they don't really sound like anyone else, other than the occasional influence that shines through. Despite some unevenness, if you're looking for something a bit off-kilter, Hands of Goro would be good to check out.
