One and Only is the twentieth full-length album by everyone's favorite metal stalwarts, Anvil. If you've heard any of the past handful of albums, you know what you're in for with One and Only, so the question is, how does it compare to what has come before? Honestly, it is a step down from the last couple (Impact is Imminent, Legal at Last) which had more of the metallic fire of Anvil's early releases, and more in line with the hard rocking heavy metal of Anvil is Anvil or Pounding the Pavement. What we have this time around is lots of mid-paced, anthemic songwriting with simple lyrics about the metal life ("Feed Your Fantasy," "Rocking the World") and the woes of modern society ("Truth is Dying," "Condemned Liberty") with plenty of the same riffs and lead breaks that have become part of the band's signature sound. I'm always happy to have a new Anvil album, but I know full well they've got a formula that works for them, and it is one that doesn't blow me away anymore. One and Only isn't bad, it just sounds a bit generic and recycled and therefore destined to be a middle of the pack album in Anvil's long and storied career.
